Build apps with AI. Understand every line.
A step-by-step pathway for young people aged about 9–18: from what AI is, to coding with an AI helper and a real coding agent, to building web and mobile apps — first in a safe sandbox, then with professional tools.
No installs, no API keys. Guardians create learner logins — no child email needed.

How GenKid works
Find a starting point
A short placement check suggests where to begin. It's a guide, not a test of how clever you are.
Learn in small steps
Short lessons, examples to try in the browser, and checks that show what you've understood.
Build with AI — safely
An AI helper gives hints first, and a real coding agent (OpenCode) proposes changes you review line by line.
Grow a portfolio
Finished projects go into a private portfolio with notes on what you built and how AI helped.
The pathway
Eight stages, placed by skill
AI Foundations
What AI is, how it learns from examples, how chatbots generate text, and how to use AI tools clearly, safely, fairly and honestly. No coding needed.
Coding Foundations with AI
Learn to think like a coder, build your first web pages with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, then practise coding alongside an AI helper — staying in charge by reading, testing and understanding every line.
Building Apps in the GenKid Sandbox
Learners move from single pages to real interactive apps: data in arrays and objects, functions, drawing the page from data, forms, and app state. Then they learn to build apps well — planning, accessibility, testing, refactoring with AI and writing up their work honestly.
Professional Development Workflow
How real software gets built and published safely: secrets, permissions, backups, terminals, Git, deploying, domains, databases, test-mode payments, voice APIs and servers. Every real-world tool is taught through GenKid's sandbox first, and any real account is set up and owned by a parent or guardian where the tool's terms require it.
Building Mobile Apps with AI
Learners design apps for phones: small screens, thumbs and touch, responsive layouts and installable web apps, all previewed in a phone-sized frame inside GenKid. Later courses move to React Native with Expo in a GenKid-owned workspace, then real devices and releasing — always with a guardian.
Transition to Professional AI Coding Apps
How professional AI coding tools are paid for, the different ways they run (web, desktop and command line), and how to choose tools that fit their age rules. Real tools are explored through GenKid's sandbox and, where the terms allow, alongside a parent or guardian.
Agents
How AI agents work: goals, tools, plans, actions and feedback loops. Learners inspect permissions, understand prompt injection and excessive agency, and evaluate agents. All hands-on agent work happens inside GenKid's sandbox, where GenKid holds the keys on its server and every risky action needs approval.
Sharing and Marketing Projects
How to present projects clearly and honestly: descriptions, demos, screenshots and portfolios, always with personal information removed. Later, how to share online safely with adult-managed accounts and within each platform's rules.
Designed for children from the start
Private by default. No social features. AI that's clearly labelled.
Private by default
Projects, progress and portfolios are private. There are no public profiles.
No chat or leaderboards
No messaging between learners, no public rankings and no social sharing in GenKid.
AI is labelled
Every AI reply is marked as AI-generated, and agent changes are reviewed line by line.
No personal info needed
The AI helper stops if someone types an email, address or other personal details.
Guardians in control
A parent or guardian owns the account, creates learner logins, chooses AI settings and can delete everything.
Rules for where you live
Consent and privacy rules are applied by country, for families around the world.
